Start with one business and its accounts
- Set the business, currency and start date deliberately.
- Add the bank, card, cash or Stripe accounts whose activity you will record.
- Enter known opening balances; a recorded balance is not a live bank balance.
- Keep receipts with the actual income/expense records.
- Review and match imported statement activity before closing a month.
Example: invoice, payment and fee
An invoice is a charge to a client. A successful payment records money collected. A processor fee is a separate cost. Keep each distinct so you do not count the invoice and its payment as two separate receipts of money.
Where smpl.ledger fits
Free supports one business, unlimited money records, receipt storage, reports/exports, accountant access and monthly closing. You can connect supported smpl Stripe payments to a chosen business ledger. Automatic bank feeds, tax filing and a fully automatic historical payment backfill are not claimed.
Accountant handoff
Review missing receipts, unmatched activity and questions before closing the period. Invite your accountant using the existing access controls and export the records they need. Reports and workpapers do not certify your books or file a return.
Personal money has its own mode
Personal Ledger is Free and separate from business books. Record income and spending, plan bills, set budgets and track goals. Plans do not move money or automatically create transactions.
